What is a Card Verification Value (CVV) number?

The CVV code is a 3 or 4 digit number located on the back of your VISA or MasterCard credit or debit card. It can also be referred to as a CVV2, CVC2, CID. It is not encryted in the magnetic stripe on your card. It is usually located next the signature strip on the back of your card.

American Express cards have a 4 digit number located on the front of the credit card just above the right side of your card number.

The first code, referred to as the CVV1 or CVC1 code, is already encoded into the magnetic stripe for transactions that take place in person.

A CVV or AVS number is not the same as a PIN number that you put into a keypad.
